2023 Artist In Residence
"As a ceramic artist with a primary practice in functional art, the Caetani CeramAIR residency offered me a great opportunity to explore new avenues in my work. The center was a positive and restful haven that instilled creative energy into a new body of work I was exploring.
I have a strong desire to represent the human body in my work, especially because ceramics is such a tactile material, and the residency gave me the space to explore a more sculptural angle that I did not have the space to accommodate in my own studio."
Artist Statement
"I consider opposites during the creation of my pieces. In my functional work I draw inspiration from nature and its tangle of life while also creating forms that are quite structured and architectural. I aim to represent an organized chaos, an unpredictability that is then contained in a refined manner.
My sculptural work leans more towards imbalance. It explores the strength in the imperfect. Life is a hazardous undertaking and there are many ways in which things could go wrong. The forms I create are precarious, tall and twisting, and then are put through a ‘trial-by-fire’ by the process of pit firing. This results in delicate pieces that have elegant strength and power."
