About the Project
As we as humans close the door on our tactile environment choosing more and more to live in the cerebral landscape of screens, I am interested in exploring our decreasing interactions with the natural world particularly from the view of the child.As they grow up with an almost intuitive understanding of computer systems so different from the previous generations, does it change how they learn and interact with the natural environment?I am working on a documentary series of life around the Swan Lake, Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lakes. Focusing on how the people of Vernon interact with the lake ecosystems and incorporate them into their everyday lives in acts of recreation, ritual and survival, particularly focusing on how children now see and learn from this unique landscape. ~ Tracey Nearmy
About the Artist
Australian photographer Tracey Nearmy began her career at a community newspaper in Adelaide and has worked for numerous publications throughout Australia. Nearmy graduated from the Queensland College of Arts / Griffith University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Photojournalism and has received national recognition for her work in Cross Projections, the Reportage Festival and at Walkley slide nights.She is currently travelling through the Americas during a leave of absence from her staff photographer position with Australian Associated Press (AAP) Australia’s national news wire service.When Nearmy’s not undertaking photojournalism assignments her work looks at the role of disintegration in the process of fertility, creation and change through documentary, portraiture and experimental lighting techniques. She also explores the relationship people have with the environment by looking at how they interact with introduced species and deal with the degradation of the natural world.Nearmy is a member of Australian photojournalism collective ‘fotostrada’. In 2012 she won the Head On portrait prize and has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout her career.Nearmy will present a talk to the local community that introduces her past and present artwork. She will leave a piece of artwork in the community.Tracey is residing at the Caetani House during her residency. She is working in the region at various locations and can be found on-site at the Allan Brooks Nature Centre from 9.30 am - 1.30 pm most Tuesdays - Fridays.Thanks to Aaron Deans and the Allan Brooks Nature Centre for providing endless studio space for Tracey Nearmy and subsequent Fresh!
