Fresh!Air artist Roberta Pyx Sutherland Sep/Oct 2018
Roberta Pyx Sutherland or “Pyx” is a visual artist living in Victoria and on Hornby Island, Canada. Her education includes a BFA (Hon.) from the University of Victoria, as well as further studies of printmaking and ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) in the UK and the Pacific Northwest. She previously completed a two-week residency at Caetani in 2017, which you can read more about here.

Box 20038Vernon, BC V1T 9L4Current ProjectFor her 2018 fall FRESH AiR residency Roberta will concentrate in creating a visual art project dedicated to the environmental legacy of Allan Brooks. She explains: "Brooks has bequeathed to us a collection of beautiful bird paintings that reflected life-long meticulous and tenacious research. His dedication to the study and observation of Canadian birds is an inspiration."The subject matter of her residency will be the natural information gathered at ABNR. It will include mapping the flight patterns of resident and migratory birds as well as documenting the activities of other terrestrial species. She may also conduct a geological investigation of the varieties and uses of local natural pigments.The initial phase of the project will include these explorations as they incorporate drawing and photography. The completion stages will translate this information into visual experience that could include artist books, exhibition installations, large paintings, and editions of intaglio prints.To see the variety of projects she's completed so far, check out her website here!
