Carmen Winther is a sculpture and installation artist living in Coldstream, British Columbia.Winther first studied industrial design at the Ontario College of Art and Design University before transferring to a BFA program with a focus in sculpture at UBC Okanagan.Industrial design instilled in her a desire to produce functional and usable objects, which has greatly influenced her sculptural production.Winther’s research in anti-capitalist theories and sustainability informs her artwork conceptually. She produces works that promotes self-sustainability and self-governance, while re-instilling value into discarded materials. She produces furniture, storage vessels, and clothing using accessible tools and free materials in order to take ownership over the means of production.During her time at UBC Okanagan, Winther has participated in a number of exhibitions and events including group exhibitions at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art and the Vernon Public Art Gallery, and installations at Living Things Festival and Picnic in the Night. This summer, Winther is participating in an artist residency at the Caetani Cultural Centre. In spring 2020, she will be having a solo exhibition in the window space of the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art.
