This haunting work relates major “convulsions” throughout human history to similar such upheavals of the natural, geological world. Sveva considers the immense impact of volcanic eruptions upon our world to be paralleled with the effects upon human culture of extremist leaders. These leaders are described as “absolutists” who were “violators of the world,” and appear isolated upon individual hoodoos, separated from each other by vibrant flowing lava as a means for suggesting their unyielding natures and the chasms they engendered. Among the historic figures pictured are Lenin, Hitler, Napoleon, and Genghis Khan.
These figures, who each realized their ideals at the indescribable expense of the masses, are forsaken in the dangerous magma crater of their own making. Looming out of a molten sea, the stark remnants of these historic figures suggest a foreboding of the perils inherent in following strongman leaders.
