Beth Gallup

2022, Artist In Residence

“Highlights of my Caetani residency experience include Kristin’s support to set up my assigned studio as a functional one for me. The library, with its sizeable collection of books and generous table was a second, welcome space to work, generate idea for future pieces. The separation of work and living space also inspired productivity. The time, opportunity and space to focus was a a gift. ”

Artist Bio

The functional, industrial objects that support our Canadian way of life often appear in Beth’s landscapes. She sees them to opportunities to reflect on how we perceive reality. Her work asks the viewer to consider “What is really there?” Instead of magnifying whatever natural beauty that exists beyond, above or around the purely, Beth highlights the juxtaposition they create with the purely natural.

Another recurring theme in Beth’s often-surreal work is food and a celebration of it, food and our relationship to it. As a necessity, something we touch daily, Beth finds it a rich place to play.

Beth’s pieces are recognizable by the priority she gives to colour and light. She builds thin layers of acrylic on canvas, sometimes adding scraps of text, photos or found elements like feathers. Wordplay usually drives her titles, subtle humour her subject and material choices.

Beth lives and creates in Fernie, BC, a mountain town nestled within the homelands of the Ktunaxa.
